When reupholstering makes sense
- Yes, if the frame is sound. A solid wood frame, springs or webbing that still hold, a size you like: a sofa like this lasts many more years with a new cover.
- Yes, if you love it. A family sofa, a model you can no longer find, a period armchair: reupholstering them is the only way to keep them.
- No, if everything needs redoing. If the frame is chipboard or gives way, a new sofa is the better choice: the upholsterer will tell you at the first visit.
HOW MUCH MATERIAL YOU NEED
Quantities by type of sofa
- Armchair: 4-5 m² of leather or 3-4 m of fabric.
- 2-seater sofa: 9-12 m² of leather or 7-9 m of fabric.
- 3-seater sofa: 13-17 m² of leather or 10-13 m of fabric.
- Corner sofa: 21-26 m² of leather or 16-21 m of fabric.

Yes, the upholsterer removes the leather and fits the fabric on the same frame. The reverse works too.
If it is only dry or stained, try cleaning and conditioning first: here is how. If it is torn, cracked or faux leather that is flaking, it needs a new cover.
Claws damage any material. Smooth leather and fabrics with a tight, low weave hold up better; claws catch more in bouclé and long-pile fabrics.

The material for a 3-seater ranges from about €200 in velvet to about €430-760 in leather. On top of that comes the upholsterer’s labour, which varies with the model and the area: ask for a quote.
