You don’t need a new sofa to change your living room. With a little velvet, some bouclé or a piece of genuine leather you can make cushions you won’t find in shops, in the colours you choose.

What colour for the cushions?
The rule that never fails: one colour that picks up a detail of the room, one in contrast and a different texture, like velvet next to bouclé or leather next to fabric.
Grey or blue sofa
Warm it up with mustard, cognac or terracotta. For a calmer look, sage green and cream.

HOW MUCH FABRIC YOU NEED
Front and back, with 1.5 cm for the seams
- 40×40 cushions: 1 m of fabric is enough for 3 cushions, 2 m for 6.
- 50×50 cushions: 1 m for 1 cushion, 1.5 m for 2, 2.5 m for 4.
- Leather front: a pre-cut 50×50 leather piece makes the front of a 45×45 cushion; the back in fabric.
Indicative quantities for fabrics 140-145 cm wide. Fabric is sold from 1 m, then in half metres.

How to sew a cushion cover
- Cut two squares: cushion size plus 1.5 cm per side. For a 50×50, two 53×53 squares.
- Fit the zip on the bottom edge, between the two squares, right sides together.
- Close the other sides: open the zip a little, sew the other three sides 1.5 cm from the edge and clip the corners diagonally.
- Turn and fill: turn the cover right side out, push the corners out well and insert the cushion pad.
You need scissors, pins, a zip as long as the side of the cushion and a sewing machine, even a home one. For leather use a leather needle and long stitches.
