WHY IT HAPPENS
Faux leather can’t be repaired: it gets replaced
- It is a film. Faux leather is a layer of plastic spread on a fabric: over time it stiffens, cracks and peels off, starting from the edges.
- There is nothing underneath. Under the film there is only the backing fabric, nothing to recover: the only way out is a new cover.
- Genuine leather lasts. It has no film to lose: over the years it gains character instead of wearing out.
The differences are explained in the article Genuine leather or faux leather.
DIY OR UPHOLSTERER
What you can redo yourself and what you can’t

The headboard: even by yourself
If it comes off the bed, usually screwed on at the back, you can redo it on a table: remove the old cover, add a layer of wadding if needed, stretch the leather or fabric and staple it at the back.

Bed frame and buttoning: the upholsterer
Padded bed frames and buttoned headboards need sewing and workshop tools. You choose and buy the material here, the upholsterer does the work.

QUESTIONS?
Frequently asked questions about headboards
Better not: flaking faux leather keeps crumbling under the new cover and makes lumps. Remove it and start again from the padding.
Leather cleans with a cloth and lasts longer; velvet and bouclé are warmer and softer. Since you lean your head on it, choose a material you like to touch.
Yes, but buttoned upholstery is a job for an upholsterer. For a plain headboard a staple gun is enough.
A 160×60 cm headboard needs about 2.5 m². Write to us before ordering: we check that the piece covers the whole headboard without seams.
