REUPHOLSTER YOUR CHAIRS

Worn-out kitchen chairs? Don't throw them away: reupholster them

A torn seat, faux leather that is peeling, a colour that no longer fits: the frame is still sound, only the cover has had its day. A chair needs little material and a little patience, and you can redo it yourself in an afternoon.

IS IT WORTH IT?

Reupholstering costs far less than buying new

  • The frame lasts, the cover doesn’t. Wood and metal last for decades: the cover is the first thing to give out.
  • It costs little. For 4 seats, 1.5 m of Vogue velvet is enough: €29.85. In Spessorato genuine leather you need 2 m²: €65.80.
  • You choose the colour. Hundreds of leather and fabric colours: match the chairs to your table and kitchen, or change everything.

HOW MUCH MATERIAL YOU NEED

Measure the seat and add 7-8 cm per side

The margin is for the fold under the seat. Quantities are indicative. Fabric is sold from 1 m, then in half metres; leather from 2 m².

1-2 chairs

For seats up to 40×40 cm, one pre-cut 50×50 leather piece per chair is enough.

4 chairs

45×45 seats: 1.5 m of fabric (140-145 cm wide) or 2 m² of leather.

6 chairs

45×45 seats: 2 m of fabric or 3 m² of leather.

With a backrest

The material roughly doubles. Measure seat and backrest and, if in doubt, write to us: we'll work it out with you.

DIY

How to reupholster them, in 5 steps

  1. Unscrew the seat. Turn the chair over: on most models the seat is fixed from below with 4 screws.
  2. Remove the old cover. Take out the staples with a staple remover: the old cover becomes your pattern.
  3. Check the padding. If the foam is flattened or crumbling, replace it: 3-4 cm is enough for a kitchen chair.
  4. Stretch and staple. Lay the material out, pull it from the centre towards the corners and fix it with the upholstery staple gun.
  5. Finish and reassemble. Make small folds at the corners, trim the excess and screw the seat back on.

You need a screwdriver, a staple remover, a staple gun with 6-8 mm staples and good scissors. For padded, sewn backrests an upholsterer is the better choice: you choose and buy the material here, they do the work.
